MENTAL HEALTH ACT MANAGERS

Section 23 of the Mental Health Act 1983 (Amended) gives the "Hospital Managers" the power to discharge certain patients from the hospital.

At Oak View Adolescent Unit, this function is performed by a panel of no less than 3 members of the Mental Health Act Managers Team. It is their duty to review the patient's detention under the Mental Health Act at intervals and at the patient's request. These Managers are appointed by the Hospital but not employed.

Oak View has appointed a number of people from the surrounding area, but we still need to appoint more. All our existing Hospital Managers have varied professional backgrounds. Experience of working with a wide range of community group is desirable, though not essential.

The role is essentially voluntary, Hospital Managers are not appointed as staff by the Hospital nor do they have any financial interest in the Hospital.

Managers would be trained in the relevant aspects of the Mental Health Act and the Code of Practice.

This is a challenging and important role and we believe those people appointed as Managers should have the skills to communicate with people at all levels in our Hospital and to allow the patient to express their own feelings about their detention in hospital. The Managers conduct hearings in a manner that is fair, in good faith and without bias to ensure all parties concerned have an opportunity to state their case. The patient's health, safety and protection of themselves and others is the key to this role.

If you feel that you would be suited to fill this role and/or would like to know more please contact: Mrs Tricia Morris for further information or for an application form on Tel: 01689-883180
